There turn out to be sound, scientific/medical reasons for some of the practices codified into Law in Leviticus. The fact that those reasons were discovered centuries later does not invalidate the practice. In fact, it could be said that the powers of observation among those ancient nomads was as keen as out own, without benefits of laboratory or instrument.
Simply: "If we do this, we prevent that," and "If we stop doing this, we prevent that, too." Didn't need to know why it worked, as long as they knew it did work.
By the way, fundamentalism has nothing at all to do with the religious roots of circumcision. You may not have noticed through your neutronium-clad cranium, but Fundies aren't Jews... quite the opposite, in fact. Furthermore -- in my experience at least -- the anti-circumcision crowd has been mainly conservative Catholic.
Know what else? There's not a circumcised male on the planet who remembers the procedure, let alone is traumatized by it, as long as it's done when it's supposed to be -- within the first eight days of life.
