We don't "want" Afghanistan.
We intervened years ago to keep the Soviets from annexing it, and we attacked it in 2001 because people based there decided it wasn't enough to be "left to fend for themselves," and decided to mount an attack on U.S. soil.
Without 9/11, odds are the Taliban would still be running the place, and nobody around the world would care all that much about religious oppression, opium, or women getting shot in the back of the head (except, to their credit, the National Organization of Women, which was pushing for women's rights there when almost nobody else was.)
