Cultural and religious reasons

Financial too. The comfort zone. The role zone.
My parents live like that and have for years. And they mostly can't stand each other. My dad torments my mother and she takes it, and has for years. She's had cancer twice and she portrays the victim.
I get sick and tired of listening to her complain.

I've been polite about it, and I've been exasperated about it, I've told her to STOP bringing it up when I'm home visiting (which is rare) and had her in tears, but lately........because of their age (early 80's), I do my best to comfort them both without being judgemental. It was a helluva role model for me and after seeing my options for a lifetime of misery for me if I stayed, I opted out of a marriage when my kids weren't even in school. It was a long haul for me, but it was the right decision.

The old school was into suffering more than this younger generation. I know young women at 20-25 who won't take any crap or manipulation from a man, which totally amazes me because I grew up in male-dominated society where women were supposed to cook and clean and be subservient to men. The women my age that I know are determined to be self-sufficient at all costs. And there's very few men that can deal with that without being manipulative. So the dance goes on.

I saw the billboard the lawyers put up and it was very sexually oriented.
That's a poor way of advertising but it sure gets the 30-40 yr. olds thinking. No wonder the Christian community balked at it. I think it's hysterical, not only that they put it up; but that they had to take it down.
