These words were given in an interview by Army Staff Sargeant Darrell Ray Griffen Jr. who was killed in Iraq by sniper fire back in March. But he left behind a legacy of the war, through film interview and pictures and he is on the cover of this week's US NEWS.
Read it if you can.
Six pages of carnage and a simplified view of what he and his unit encountered in Najaf. They went in to surround one of our helicopters that had gone down and were surprised by a whole army of "insurgents" armed to the teeth with weapons, some of the guns were identified as Iraq police rifles. Taken by surprise, they had to call in air strikes resulting in carnage he said was approaching "apocalyptal".
He was a trained medic before doing two tours of Iraq. He went from a Christian to an atheist. His story is powerful. I read it in US NEWS last night and it a MUST for reading. You'll see how our invasion to take out Sadam for weapons of mass destruction, encouraged to promote a democracy, has evolved to complete lawlessness with changing deadly loyalties. He says "As of late I have started to wonder whether or not we are killing insurgents or merely combatants fighting each other in a "war of all against all."
This starts with a brief two minute interview, then runs another 20 minutes if you care to hear what he has to say. Either that, or pick up the May 21st issue of US <NEWS.>
