We also have resisted taking money out of equity although we have a small home equity loan (might as well get the tax advantage if you're going to have some debt).
I heard a disturbing thing on talk radio this morning, on a show where I really trust the intuition of the host. He had on a guest who was an economist and was talking about the calculation of the GDP which is the leading indicator for our economic health. I wish I remembered this guy's name to look up the details but driving was a bit more important.
Seems the current calculation (and this goes back for quite some years) doesn't take into consideration jobs and services outsourced to other countries to the tune of about 30% of the final figure. Guess when the formula was created we really had no significant outsourcing so that effect was never taken into consideration.
I'm going to have to look more into this but I'm certainly not surprised. I've gotten the hunch that our country is rapidly losing its competitiveness in the world and a lowering of our GDP by 30% would be an alarming statistic.
