With enough will and (for some) imagination one can visit 1001 versions of oneself that have followed a different destiny. Each has pluses and minuses when put into a relativistic evaluation framework.
As one evolves, one's desires and goals evolve as well. The result is a life usually vastly different than the one planned after high school. As a matter of fact, if one lived a life fulfilling only such early views and desires, I think most folks would actually be unhappy.
As a result of the way the universe works, one finds oneself in absolutely perfect placement at all times. And by that I mean that the universe and yourself are in perfect alignment to maximize your development based upon your current position and mind.
Warts and all.
All the things one biases negative are there till you see them on equilibrium and can see the positive in them. Then they have no emotional power over you and fade from the forefront of your consciousness. All the illnesses, accidents and troubles, whether work-related, financial or family based are necessary.
When this working evolutionary relationship is understood by one, peace of mind is the result. As a matter of fact, one loses the selfish desires and accepts life as it comes - without reservations.
You mentioned you perveived from my posts, humor, and that's probably because when one understands these concepts and the duality of the universe, the universe seems not harsh, or cruel - but quite funny.
Humor becomes a positive response to all things negative, which would otherwise bog one down in lower, more primitive, emotional states such as hate, anger, etcetera.

PS. On another note, I'm agreeing with Art & Lindy (once every ringed moon)...lose the cigs babe. When you see them for what they truly are - tiny emotional crutches - they'll soon be repugnant to you. You'll still have to fight the chemical addiction but it's the emotional addiction that is the toughest to overcome.
