We both must have ADD. I know my son has it. I find it hard to stay focus on one thing- I have so many interests.
In Middle School, I wrote a paper on how I was going to be an Astronomer when I grew up. In college, I started out as a Geology Major but ended up getting a BS in communications because of my love of writing and photography. I even got a minor in art.
I was a math and science whiz growing up. Then I was blinded in my right eye at the age of 12. My math skills quickly went down after this, but my artistic skills soared way up. It was frustrating as hell. Thus started my conflict between Art and Science.
The left side is the logical math side of our brains. It see the world through our right eyes. Our right side is our artistic side and it see the world with our right eyes. So perhaps this was my problem.
Anyway, I never thought I would be a computer programmer but it is not bad. I tought myself how to program in 3 months, passed the MCAD test the first try, so I can also self teach myself just about anything I want to.
I have the family I wanted and wouldn’t trade that for anything.
I have written 6 books and have several more in the works. But I have yet to get one published.
I haven’t done my artwork in years.
I want to rebuild a car from the frame up. (Either a VW Bug or a DeLorean).
I want to learn how to play the guitar. I have taught myself a few chords but I know I’ll never be very good at it.
I want to produce some CGI movies of some of my stories.
I think the dream I have focused the most on, besides my family, is my writing.
I am reminded of Rush's song "Mission"
Hold your fire
Keep it burning bright
Hold the flame 'til the dream ignites
A spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission
I hear their passionate music
Read the words that touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart
When I feel the powerful visions
Their fire has made alive
I wish I had that instinct
I wish I had that drive
Spirits fly on dangerous missions
Imaginations on fire
Focused high on soaring ambitions
Consumed in a single desire
In the grip of a nameless possession
A slave to the drive of obsession
A spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission
I watch their images flicker
Bringing light to a lifeless screen
I walk through their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams
But dreams don't need to have motion
To keep their spark alive
Obsession has to have action
Pride turns on the drive
It's cold comfort
To the ones without it
To know how they struggled
How they suffered about it
If their lives were exotic and strange
They would likely have gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane
We each pay a fabulous price
For our visions of paradise
But a spirit with a vision is a dream
With a mission
