I think someone could have pumped 1,000 gallons out with an electric pump and drained in out of the yard. Sounds like a prank to me.

Although rice field owners in Japan claimed they had rice growing under water in contained fields holding several hundred thousand gallons of water that were mysteriously emptied overnight and the rice was left swirled in a circular pattern. This was well over 10 years ago.
