If the RAF had scrambled a jet that day, the tabloids the next day would have been filled with stories of "UFOs battle RAF". If the pilot saw nothing, his report would be ignored. If he identified the lights as something routine, it would be called a cover-up and government conspiracy. And if the pilot saw something but couldn't identify it, it would be quoted and exaggerated for years afterward as proof of alien invasion.
