My take

Matter distorts space. The photon 'gains' energy as it whips thru gravitationally distorted spacetime just as a Voyager probe gains energy whiping thru Jupiter's big fat gravitational field. But I'm clueless as to how the photons get 'tired' when there's no matter.

Can anyone shed some light on this? :)
