A small USB/Firewire driven HD, wrapped in a nice rubber jacket. We have one for each Mac. When properly set up, it does a backup when you simply push a button on the drive. Unfortunately, my kids rarely back up even then.

If Eri can back up important info successfully on CDs, then the capacity of a thumb drive might be enough.
