Perhaps the loss of the trees had nothing to do with the collapse of the civilization, but one thing is certain: without timber to build boats, they were stranded on that island with no way to leave it. For those of us interested in space exploration as a means of exercising our alternatives as a species, that is a lesson we ignore at at our peril.
