Just think, even with all our technology, we couldn't build the pyramids today...they would cost too much.
Maybe. The Hoover Dam contains as much concrete as the Great Pyramid contains stone. The pyramid simply occupies space, and represents the work of thousands of people over decades to build an inert and useless tomb. The Hoover Dam is a technological achievement that created power and new prosperity the moment it was finished.
The Egyptians existed for three thousand years, and had there been no external influences on them, might be there still, with their copper tools. They exerted immense effort on projects and monuments that did nothing, and basically changed nothing. That they did well for themselves as a society in meeting basic needs is unquestionable. Few people are aware that the pyramids were almost certainly built by paid workers, not slaves.
But in two hundred years Western culture has gone from horseback to interplanetary flight. I'm probably quite prejudiced, but I'm glad I live here instead. I suspect you are, too.
