I don't keep up with the real news much any more.
I actually read the paper, and it looks like they've done their homework. Its probably not what we're hoping for, but like the Wow! signal, it can't be ruled out, either.
As for the possibility of radio transmissions from this object, I wouldn't get my hopes up. At 1400+ ly, its not likely they would be transmitting in our direction, there is no way they could know we're here. It's even less likely they would be leaking an omnidirectional signal.
