First off- I certainly am not a fan of the breathless manner in which the popular press is reporting this- we have seen it before with Cold Fusion, the martian meteorite microbe, and FTL neutrinos...
To be clear, the paper that started this doesn't suggest that its evidence of ETI.... however such a paper may be forthcoming...
A more sober analysis of this data can be found here:
http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2015/10/14/weird_star_strange_dips_in_brightness_are_a_bit_baffling.html
I think all that can be said for certain is that there is something highly unusual going on, and it absolutely needs more investigation.
Take the amount of dimming Kepler saw- %22 in one event, and %15 in another. Kepler has a precision of %0.002, and the transit of an earth-like planet orbiting a sun-like star would be %0.0084.
The star in question is ~1.4 times the size of our sun...
For a solid object to cause a 25% dimming it would have to have about half the diameter of the star. (Assuming the object causing the dimming is indeed orbiting the star).
"Something really weird" does not translate to "Aliens did it"
...But it does mean it should be a high priority for further study.
