You can always imagine a weird scenario to explain any light curve. I remember one where two stars of different sizes (one of them variable)and brightnesses orbited each other, and one had a set of rings (like Saturn) which alternately cast reflections or occulted the light of the other. By cleverly picking different ecliptic plane projections, orbital elements and precession parameters for the system you could pretty much reproduce any light curve you wanted.

I don't recall how that particular system was eventually described, but it does show you what a zoo of potential strangeness can occur out there. But what I really find exciting about this system is the low infrared components. You would expect a system like this would have a lot of dust involved.
