Marcia, I really have a hard time with you saying the Democrats are liberal towards Castro. I know a huge number of Democrats and all of them really despise the man and feel he's done a huge disservice to the Cuban people. I think you're buying into the political rhetoric instead of truly looking into the hearts of individuals.
The debate seems to be not to validate anything Castro is doing or has done as dictator of Cuba but to instead stop an ineffective policy of isolation. I want us to have relations with the citizens of Cuba because I think it will ultimately destroy the dictatorial Communism he's imposed on them.
Thugs like Castro use the one-sided debate created by isolationism as a tool against the other side. Without American tourism and commerce allowing in the alternate viewpoint, he's free to flood the hearts and minds of the people there with just one side to the story.
Look at the changes going on inside China right now. The progress is slow and there are still abuses but I think without Nixon thawing the ice they'd still be as backward as they were. With trade and tourism comes that creep of new ideas and the discovery that the "enemy" is just as human as your fellow citizens. Suddenly the government propaganda gets some major holes in it.
Was Nixon being liberal when he did that? If so, maybe in that case it's not so bad a term.
