The level of "fact" I'm dealing with is on the order of an argument going on about 110 versus 220 volt appliances, except that one person believes the number is 2,220 volts. Correcting that kind of misapprehension should not lead to hours of argument.
The number of things that many people believe "that just ain't so" is legion. In almost all cases this isn't important, certainly not to me. I couldn't care less if someone thought, to pull out a very ancient example, that tomatoes were poisonous. But when it gets into the realm of politics, and when other people's votes can control my life and liberty, it starts to get annoying. A campaign to make it illegal to grow and eat tomatoes makes it my business.
