They have been studied- I don't know if you can say they have been "properly studied".
When meteorites are found, small pieces of them are generally sent to confirm that they are in fact meteorites.
And generally speaking collectors want to know as much about their collection- at least as much or more than any other person that doesn't own them.
As for "museums - and universities". They buy and sell them. And since they don't normally die, and private collector do, they general can get whole collections donated to them.
