How many times have we read about rocks containing fossils that sat in drawers for
decades before someone decided to look at them again and made an important
scientific discovery?
How about the famous Mars meteorite ALH84001? Suppose that had been picked
up by a private collector who kept it in their den with no one qualified to study it?
There will never be enough Moon rocks brought to Earth to make them common
enough. Who knows what piece of the lunar regolith might hold a key to our
understanding of where the Moon and Earth came from? Some scientists have
even speculated that some lunar rocks may actually be rocks blasted from
ancient Earth - imagine what a find that would be!
Don't worry, you'll get your space commercialization and celestial free enterprise
soon enough. Until then, we should not treat meteorites and other samples from
space casually or with dollar signs in our eyes. Their value to science far outweighs
making yet another rich guy happy for a moment.
