Space/Science » in reply to Certainly an Earth-impactor Moon formation theory stretches credulity.

What do you suggest instead?

Hi Jake

The Moon seems short on iron and low temperature compounds - a high temperature and anomalous origin seems strongly indicated and an impact makes sense. Sure it was odd, but then again some planet formation theories naturally produce Trojan planets of the right mass to wander off and impact with the main mass of that orbit. A Trojan in a walking orbit would arrive in Earth's Hill Sphere with almost zero hyperbolic excess and neatly go "splat" at the right energy.
