I don't think taxpayers should be covering this kind of thing either, but flood insurance long ago left the free-market barn, and not just in Florida. Earthquake insurance, too, come to that.

The article I quoted made one simple point: That three-quarters of what the poor get in this country is not counted in the oft-touted poverty numbers. That's all. Didn't really expect everyone to start running in circles screaming, with sparks flying out their ears.
