I would love it if the poor moved up to the middle class. I'm a Democrat and I have no investment in keeping the poor poor. I think you're attributing motives to Democrats in general that are not there. There may be some who do have those motives but there would likely be as many conservatives or more who want to keep the poor poor because conservatives tend to want to keep the whole pot of gold for themselves and the more poor there are, the more there is in the pot for the well-off to wealthy.
