phonolite
I've bashed a bunch o' rocks in my day but nothing rings like Phonolite. There's an outcrop on the road into Cripple Creek, the famous gold mining camp, upon which I have struck many a solid blow. Don't know why it does it...it's hard - a sample takes several well placed strikes, but even a really fine-grained quartzite doesn't ring like a phonolite.
