re: The eye

I disagree, Raoul. The eye is a marvelous instrument. It is a logarithmic detector with an enormous dynamic range allowing it to be useful in anything from starlight to bright sunlight, a range of millions of flux units. It is capable of phenomenal color discrimination over a major portion of that range, and very good angular resolution for its size, as well as stereoscopic vision over a range of several meters. Intensity and saturation discrimination weakness are the price we've paid for our excellent color perception. This makes our eyes ideal as an analytical remote sensor as well as a positional survey device. We are one of the few mammals with color vision.

It is also coupled with some pretty sophisticated image processing and enhancement software, as well as very capable pattern recognition algorithms through the brain. As for it's limited frequency sensitivity, it is optimized for the solar spectrum, where most light information is available. Although we have created many optical sensors which surpass it in certain regimes and modes, we have nothing mechanical comparable to it that is effective over such a wide range of conditions.

Although we don't have zoom capability, I know some raptors have multi-resolution eyes (some small parts of the visible field are much higher resolution). Birds of prey can inspect a great angular field, but parts of their lenses and retinas are designed for extreme disance work. For example, a soaring hawk can examine an entire valley at low resolution, and still direct a narrow cone of hi-res to isolate, identify and target a mouse a thousand meters away. Human eyes are among the best in the animal kingdom in all around performance, although some creatures may exceed us in certain optical tasks. By contrast, our other senses are not as well develeoped as in other animals.

Evolution invested a lot of our mental capacity into visual processing, at the expense of our other senses.
