A lot of these issues actually are binary in nature, or at least much simpler than they are painted.
Collectivism, of which leftism is a subset, thrives on bullshit. Collectivists don't want things seen clearly. They need fog, confusion, ambivalence, chronic logorreah, concealment of causes and effects, and the obliteration of clear definitions and terms. Their existence actually depends on the average person not really understanding what's actually going on.
Even better if they can shut thinking out of the process entirely.
Believe me, Obama is not going to become President because people have rationally analyzed his positions and their consequences.
