I'll grant the existence of a uniquely Mormon brand of crazy. But you could say the same about the extremists associated with every religion--seems to me that while the surface doctrine varies, the worldview underneath is strikingly similar, which suggests that the culprit is the common paranoia and alienation more than the theology. After all, Mormon and Protestant militia and other extremists find common ground despite striking theological differences.
In another post you wrote about the roots of that paranoia in Mormon history. I know the broad outlines of that history, and I've long thought that the early Mormons were treated viciously and barbarically. You make a good case for how that explains today's Mormon militiamen like the Bundy brothers.
