The alcohol problem

Always bearing in mind that some people are genetically predisposed to alcohol addiction and do better to leave the stuff alone...

The wines in the US pack more of a punch than European table wines. The alcohol content is higher because it sells better. Every European I have asked has confirmed this, as well as every American I know who has travelled, and drunk wine, in Europe. We Americans are also notorious for our serving sizes. A glass of wine can mean a whole other thing depending on the vintner and the size of the glass.

Another part of your observation on drugs in the home said something different to me. You mentioned openly having a glass of wine with the family at dinner. It's not the "glass of wine" part that wired your brain not to do drugs, my friend; it's the "with the family at dinner" part. Honest conversation with adults prepares teenagers to be adults. They didn't just let you drink. They showed you how.

Children need words and attention and time together with the adults in their lives. They need to see the example. There is no substitute. "Just say no" is a stupid way to raise kids when "just say no" is the only direction they get.
