Kids are gonna do what kids are gonna do.

Most will try pot. Some will know those that deal pot. May even try it themselves.
Ecstacy is a big hit with teens. They'll drink underage and they'll drive too fast. They won't wear their seatbelts or condoms either.

Some may steal, trespass, get in fights, carry weapons of some sort and be prepared to do battle with a someone's who threatened them. I'm not sure you can do much about it. Might just be a stage they all have to go through to graduate to adulthood.

Kids need boundaries, but not too tight ones. Accepting disappointment from them is a necessity, but as long as you let them know you love them no matter WHAT, and that you'll always be there for them in a bind, I think they grow out of it. They may even finally come to you with their problems, or for advice.

My daughter exhibited some out of control drinking a few years back when she was on the road nationally with NASCAR as a well paid model. It was the lifestyle, and I worried about her because of her father's genes......who wasn't born an alcoholic, but who grew into it in his mid 30's. She has completely straightened out by getting off the road and getting into a stable relationship, but the concern was there. I don't envy you, because their judgemnet becomes impaired and they become careless.

Forget the bumps on the knees from falling off a bike; the worries are much worse.

>My real concern is that while we did plenty of talking, we may have been over protective and didn't let her try and fail enough on her own.....there's that little voice in my mind saying are you just as over reactive as you were over protective earlier?"

Good observations and both right. There comes a time when you have to step back and watch them make mistakes. I know both my kids did, usually in their late teens. Then they worked out the details. I didn't harp about it, but when they came around sheepishly and admitted it, then I gave them the full perspective on it. They matured quickly after that. Good luck with yours. I don't know what makes kids grow up damn near perfect. Some just get lucky, but some adults have to cross their fingers and wait it out.
