They are a cancer. Of course your right but what we are doing now is making it much worse. I live about 30 miles from a city that is going over the brink, right now, because of our ‘war on drugs’. They have daily gun battles between the police and the drug gangs over who is going to supply drugs to the US. That’s what’s going on in Tijuana and from what I hear several other border cities.

I remember watching one of the many Drug Czars; I think it was from the Carter era, who said that his job was to ‘get the price of drugs as high as he could’. He had the idea that since his work was to choke off supply he could measure his success by the cost on the street – and he is right. But what he, and I guess you, cannot comprehend is that making the cost higher and higher simply brings out badder and badder people willing to cash in and kill you and I if necessary along the way. Let’s face it – at what point would you be willing to mule in some hash? Be honest there is a price!

We as a nation are engaged in bringing down several South American countries because of our simple minded attempts to stop the flow of drugs and I think that drugs will sooner or later become the excuse for our adventure in Afghanistan as well. We are a nation more likely to put its citizens in jail than any other and it’s getting worse. This is the result of the criminalization of drugs. It didn’t work with Alcohol and it won’t work with drugs.

We as a nation have run off the tracks.
