We burned coal, occasionally coke if we could afford it. I really wonder what that did to my lungs. I know what it did to my clothes. I had to hang clothes out to dry or drape them all over our flat (apartment). When I came home to America, I had to throw all my clothes away. They were permeated with soot that would not come out.
