Everyone accepts that it is "reasonable" to have a limit for the speed of land vehicles, matched roughly to road quality and traffic density. This is in the general interest of everyone, not so much to protect individuals in their own vehickles from their own stupidity, but to protect innocent bystanders and other road users from being involved in someone else's excessive driving.
Of course, we all speed sometimes when we think it's "safe". We choose to break the law because we feel it is restricting our freedom. We generally speed when the road is relatively clear - when we do not see any othe significant traffic. but the greatest danger comes from vehicles we do NOT see, like a car about to turn across the road we are speeding down, and he thinks it's safe because we are so distant that at a legal speed he has time to make the turn before we arrive.
Is it appropriate to only obey the laws when nobody is looking?
And what if OTHER people decide that OTHER laws are restricting THEIR freedom?
Like the laws on property and Theft, for example?
Society is a complex hive organism. it's greater good is not always the individuals and vice versa. You may say, like Heinlein, that Humans are not Ants. But as we've discussed elsewhere, an organism is a gestalt of cells, an ant colony a gestalt of individual ants, and a society is a gestalt of individual people.
