Dickens was right

"Unfettered self-interest is NOT a free market; it is exploitation, arrogance, bullying, theft, and brutality. Governments exist to limit the depredations of the strong upon the weak, for the benefit of all."

It is true, governments sometimes abuse this mandate. However, they must continue to exist because we can count on the strong, when unopposed, to always abuse theirs. "Exploitation, arrogance, bullying, theft, and brutality" seem to be the danger of power of any kind, perhaps this is inevitable, no matter what we do. But to elevate this pathology to a civic virtue and a fundamental human right is an obscenity and must never be allowed to happen again.
