giving until it hurts

I watched a rerun last night about a guy born of a rich family known for philanthopy.

In an effort to one up his parent's genorosity, the guy gave away his entire family fortune of over 40 mil, keeping only enough to subsist.

By coincidence he had a rare blood type, so to further demonstarte his goodness he started donating his organs (those he could spare) to needy people committed to doing good works. He gave a kidney to a woman that was studying law and planning to work in child advocacy.

The woman's circumstances changed and she abandonded her study of law and had a child. The donor had the woman murdered so the kidney could be re-transplanted to a more worthy donor that would contribute to the public good.

Somehow it made me think of the welfare mentality but I suppose it could also be thought of as expecting certain behavior from the recipient of your charity
