Transit in Oregon.

You're right in that Oregon has some very significant traffic problems in the Portland area. However, the "Park and Ride" system parallels the areas of greatest concern with light rail which is fast, efficient and cheap.

Those driving as well as those riding should appreciate light rail. It takes some of the pressure off of the freeways and could take more. I suspect ridership will depend upon how miserable it is to drive as well as the price of fuel. And it's an alternative if one's car is unavailable for whatever reason.

I couldn't be a bigger fan of light rail. In Portland with a bicycle and bus fare one can go anywhere in a reasonable amount of time. And those who do make it easier for the drivers.

I used to say it's one of those things that is being built for 20 years from now. Then it will look like genius, especially as the rights-of-way become more and more expensive. And I think I was pessimistic. It's being built for 5 years from now.
