I believe I said that for those who drive the folks who take public transit will make it easier. And the easier it is to take public transit the easier it will be to drive. If there were no public transit how nice would it be for your mother to sit in the more common and longer traffic jams for hours at a time?
Obviously there is no one perfect method of transportation which will answer all the needs of everyone all the time. I think the more options there are the easier it is for each person using those options.
Face it. At rush hour it's nicer for light-rail riders to have all those cars on the road. It would be mighty crowded and uncomfortable with each of those folks on the train.
And, by the way, if one does drive on, for instance, the Portland-Salem route, or Portland-Vancouver freeway during rush hour you will see more than a few people reading a newspaper or texting. They could do that a bit more safely on light-rail.
