For the infirm, that's great. But my mom is healthy and fine driving (and not yet 65), she just has a condition that makes it uncomfortable to walk and stand a lot at one time. What's the advantage to her of scheduling a ride days in advance and losing flexibility, etc., vs just driving her own car? What's the advantage environmentally of having a one or a handful of passengers in a large diesel van as opposed to her driving her new and very efficient Toyota?
Bottom line is there are lots of people who's travel needs, personal preference, location relative to transit routes, etc., will make driving the better option, and that would be true even if there were twice as many light rail lines in the area. (It would be less true if Portland spent a couple of billion dollars on bus improvements instead, but that rail fetish seems very deeply ingrained in most cities).
