All you list are the positives about nuclear power and you're right on every one. However you and Tom and the others conveniently forget one major problem with nuclear plants.
They are phenomenally expensive to construct, enough so that the moratorium on building them over the last few decades has been more about the refusal of the utility companies to ante up those costs than any real restriction on them. Any talk about beginning to build plants today entails huge governmental subsidies to make that happen. Most of the people opposed to new plants argue that, were that same amount of cash put towards something as simple as retrofitting all homes and businesses in the United States with better insulation, it would completely eliminate the need for those plants in the first place.
Actually Lee, I want a few more plants built just because I believe your power should come from diverse sources just as I think our cars ought to run from mutiple energy sources. It gives you breathing room.
Safe? Much more than the 3 Mile Island days although human error can still make them iffy. No more so though than conventional plants.
Effective? Technology works but cost effective is not true.
