A few points:

Fission did not "fail." It was deliberately and methodically murdered in the United States, and by the very same people who are now writing energy articles in Daily Kos and the New York Times. I could go into a lot of bloody details, like Shoreham and others. Did you know that if Shoreham was on line, it would now be replacing coal-fired sources that put the same about of CO2 into the air as almost 1 million automobiles? Never mind the other crap coal plants throw out. That's just one reactor.

Go tell France that fission has "failed."

The recommended solutions from that quarter seem to be somewhat vague. The Kos writer sums the whole thing up in one phrase: "We can become citizens of the world, working together with the rest of the peoples of the world to solve a problem that can no longer be skirted."

Kum Bah Yah Energy Policy?

But I have a pretty good idea what the details of their solutions will eventually turn out to be. "Hard choices" is a code word for "control."

The market response time to oil prices is not short. Production of new fields and reworking old ones takes time. So do consumption responses, like smaller cars. Remember, we've been through this all before.
