re: Intelligent Design...
I've always felt the demos is not qualified to elect its leaders, but it is extremely well qualified to send them packing if they don't work out. Perhaps our leadership could be assigned by examination, seniority, blind chance, appointment, a nominating committee, or some other method, and the ballot be reserved as a means of deciding whether or not they should remain in office.
This would be a stable system, since the voters would not be quick to get rid of a merely mediocre leader knowing his replacement might be totally dreadful. But anyone who was truly awful would not last long either, and a successful leader would have the time and support to install meaningful reforms.
