I remember reading an article about the Black Sea flooding. It happened all of a sudden, due to erosion of a natural dam, but there was time for people to walk away from it, as opposed to a "wall of water" scenario. Still, they probably had to leave everything they couldn't carry behind, and it certainly must have made a lasting impression that would have been passed down orally to future generations.
