McClellan participated for a while in what we all know was going on. And then blew the whistle with the credibility of an insider. And now is being blamed by a number of people for either participating or blowing the whistle.
It's no wonder to me that he stayed with his job as long as he did. You stay with and fight for your buddies. And it's no wonder to me that he left, finally, and took as long as he did to subject himself to the smears which are coming.
There have been many affairs in which decent people participated and then became disillusioned. The Vietnam War comes to mind. Soviet defectors are celebrated over here even though they were powerful advocates for their system. When influential members of either political party change sides they are celebrated.
I'm thinking of John Dean. It seems to me that had John Dean come to light in this administration, there would be calls from BOTH sides to lynch him. As it was only the Nixonites smeared him as much as they could, everyone else mostly doubted or waited for confirmation.
It doesn't make sense to me why some folks want to treat McClellan as a pariah for finally having the courage to face the villification which is coming from what were his own. I'm sure there are good reasons, I just haven't read any yet.
