Well If 'you' can come out of the closet...

I maintain and repair 13 excavators, 6 dump truck and trailers, and a bunch of other support equipment for a construction company. We just got a new shop so I did the shop layout, install/wire a new air compressor, etc. I also do the scheduling and maintain the parts inventory. Just me, and helper #2.

It's frustrating training a kid to the point where you can feel comfortable taking a day off and then have him split for greener grass.

I don't have any formal training and usually have to figure out how something is supposed to work before I can fix it. I have had two years of pre-engineering which helps a little bit once in a while. Occasionally I do mechanical drawings to take to the machine shop.

This job does satisfy the inner engineer in me. As you know, you need to figure out why something broke before fixing it- so it doesn't break again. I'm always modifying designs or making design changes so I don't have to fix something twice.

Anyhow, I know how you feel when you get the brush-off.

It's why my business card reads "Fleet Manager"...
