In High school I was into drafting/engineering and science/mathematics, though the mathematics were my weakest subject, I excelled in the Science. My senior year I discovered I only had to take a few classes to graduate, so I was able to fill the rest of my schedule with stuff that interested me. To the surprise of a lot of my friends and family I signe up for Auto-Mechanics. The reason it was such a surprise is I'm not all that handy on equipment. I suspect there was also some angst about the kids who normally took Auto. My reasoning was I needed to understand engines if I was going to get into Engineering. I didn't have a very good understanding of motors and didn't have a dad around to learn anything from. I knew I needed it and so I took it. I excelled in the class because it was all theory. I aced every test I took, but if I'm honest I was scared to get out of the classroom. I loved learning it, but getting out and actually working on a car scared me. So I aced the tests at a reasonable interval so I could finish the last test just before the end of the year. Some kids were trying hard to pass the tests in order to get into the shop, but I was just the opposite. I think the teacher was disappointed, I earned an A out of him, but I think he really wanted to get his best theory student in the shop for some hands-on experience. Experience I wasn't all that keen on getting. I regret it now. I could really have used the experience and wish I'd pushed myself harder and not stunted my own achievement to get out of having to work in the shop.
