US Civil War
The initial reason for that war was a combination of economics and states rights. The South wanted to trade its cotton for machinery in Europe. The North wanted them to purchase from the North, even though the products weren't as good and the prices were higher.
Slavery only became a large issue later as matter of strategy. Originally a fight over export tariffs, the Civil War has since been glorified as a noble war to free slaves.
