A couple of comments

In my opinion, Obama won largely because most of the media wanted him to win, and spent the entire election cycle protecting him and Biden while furiously attacking McCain, and especially Palin.

If someone can point out one major negative story out of the mainstream media about Obama, after he won the nomination from Hillary (before that, the media was more ambivalent), I'd like to see it.

That, and people were tired of the status quo, and would have voted for "change" no matter who it was. This post got no response, and I didn't really expect one.

I certainly hope that the Republican party can find a way to broaden its base and widen its tent beyond conservative white males, because it won't be healthy to have one party - the Democrats - dominating more and more in the ever more diverse America.

The Democratic definition of "diverse" is a lot of different people who all think exactly alike politically. Kind of like at our universities.

"Broaden its base" apparently means to have Republicans turn into Democrats-Lite. That isn't going to make much difference in which philosophy dominates America, other than giving the Democrats some cover on being a political monopoly. Also, we saw how well that worked for McCain. Or Bush, come to that.

I can't help but notice that the most spectacular election victories the Republicans have had (1994 and Reagan) came from candidates that were proudly conservative, knew why, and knew how to tell people about it.
