re: Can most people really handle freedom?

The vast majority of human history has been lived under tyranny of one form or another, cultural or actual, often with people's lives lived like one's parents, grandparents, and beyond, as far back as one knew. Centuries of awful "stability."

This seems to be what the article writer was touting as a laudable goal. That somehow with enough controls, capitalism and freedom can be made "safe."

They can't.

Innovation and free thought have always carried with them the implied destruction of existing ways and economic entities. The only way to keep the old ways from going on forever is to somehow destroy or suppress the new. Freedom is always unsettling.

Sadly, there is no way to measure innovations not created, or new ideas not expressed. No way to see progress that was never made. If miserable nations like those who lived under communism had no free nations to compare themselves with, their inhabitants would never know anything could be any better or different.

If the West goes under, that's pretty much it, and once memory and history die out, nobody will even care.

Is a lion in a well-designed zoo better off than one in the wild? What standards do we use to decide this?
