It's a matter of taste, I suppose.

"Star Wars" was never intended to be anything other than a space opera, not hard SF. I liked the first series, not so much the second. "Star Trek" worked harder at being SF, but in the original series, it was primarily an allegorical device to comment on society and issues (like Terry Pratchett's "Discworld"). Over the years, some "Star Trek" has been pretty good. Most of it was mediocre. Too much of it stunk.

"Babylon 5" was better than "Star Trek," with an overall narrative lacking in the latter (although "Deep Space 9" might be an exception.)

There has been damn little real-world space SF in the movies. The Mars movies, all of which blur together in my mind, couldn't avoid hauling aliens and monsters into the mix, as if the adventure of space travel wasn't enough. Look at "Apollo 13" for an example of how real-world space can be exciting.

An obscure cult favorite of mine was the British show, "Star Cops." Detective stories of the near future in space, with realistic science, good stories, and good acting. I would snap it up in a minute if it ever came out on DVD.
