If you did not grow up with Star Trek and Star Wars, you may not
have the appreciation or affection for the characters that those who
saw and understood them when they first came out do. I know my
kids don't when it comes to the original Star Trek series - they don't
really know who Kirk and Spock are and they think the sets and
special effects are cheesy. And Lord knows I have done my best to
set the little heretics on the path of righteousness, but with mixed
results so far.
I can see your point of view with Star Wars. I enjoyed the first three
films as entertainment, but the fantasy and soap opera elements hold
me back from liking it as much as Star Trek - though it also has its
limitations when it comes depicting what really might be out there in
terms of planets and intelligent life.
So what do you think of Doctor Who?

It may be a cultural/generational thing
