The trick is to actually think about what the term "selfishness" means. You are so far off the track on the idea of conservatism or libertarianism that I can't even find a thread to grab to haul you in, so I won't bother.
In traffic, I take it on myself to watch the flow, and open spaces in front of me for merging and other traffic flow issues to keep it moving smoothly. I move back a bit in the line, but as a whole, the traffic moves more consistently instead of stop-and-go. Awareness of the flow around you allows you to help keep the flow going. The added advantage is that the elbow room enhances your reaction time. Sure, there are jerks driving, but there are jerks everywhere. I don't see it as an existential issue.
A perceptual mentality sees tailgating as getting them ahead. They see themselves as having moved as far down the road as they can, until only the car directly in front stops them. They can't think enough to realize that this is what causes stop-and-go traffic in the first place.
It's still amazing the contempt many liberals have for their political opposition, utterly convinced of their own intellectual superiority. This, while operating their own politics at a level that appeals to the stupidest among us.
